ICANN published the list of applied-for top-level domains in its 2026 new gTLD round on October 7, 2026, a milestone it calls Reveal Day. Its summary counts 1,615 applications, filed between April 30 and August 12, 2026. On September 22, ICANN had said 1,663 applications were submitted and 1,616 were paid and moving forward. ICANN says the final count will be confirmed on String Confirmation Day.
What was applied for
| Group | Applications |
|---|---|
| North America | 864 |
| Europe | 506 |
| Asia, Australia and Pacific | 218 |
| Africa | 16 |
| Latin America and the Caribbean | 11 |
By type, 333 are brand applications, 16 are community-based and 15 are self-identified geographic names. There are 21 internationalized (non-Latin script) strings and 9 variant applications, and 51 applicants used ICANN’s Applicant Support Program.
ICANN’s contention-set file puts 891 of the applications into 263 sets, where two or more applicants want the same string. The busiest is .agent, with 13 applicants, among them OPENAI OPCO, LLC, Radix Technologies and XYZ.COM. Next come .bit with 11, and .api, .brand and .hub with 10 each. OPENAI OPCO also applied for .agi, which has 7 applicants.
What happens next
- October 8–21, 2026: applicants may switch to an eligible backup string.
- November 17, 2026: String Confirmation Day. ICANN publishes the final list and opens the community input and objections period, which runs until March 16, 2027.
- November 27, 2026: last day to withdraw for a 65% refund of the evaluation fee.
- First half of 2027: a prioritization draw sets the order of processing. ICANN expects string evaluation to take about 180 days. Later steps have no dates yet.
What it means if you buy domains
None of these endings can be registered yet, and ICANN has not said when any of them could launch. If you hold a trademark, the objections period that opens on November 17 is the time to check whether someone applied for a string that matches it.
