Expo shuts down Expo Agent, its web-based app-building agent

Expo ended Expo Agent, the closed-beta agent at agent.expo.dev that built Expo apps from prompts, on July 31, 2026. Projects can be downloaded and continued in other coding agents.

Expo shuts down Expo Agent, its web-based app-building agent. Announced: Jul 20, 2026, Last day: Jul 31, 2026, Status before: Closed beta, EAS services: Unchanged.

Expo said on July 20, 2026 that it was winding down Expo Agent, the web-based agent at agent.expo.dev that built Expo apps from prompts. Expo had run it as a closed beta. The agent stopped being available after July 31, 2026.

What happens to projects

Expo’s post says “your projects are safe.” Every Expo Agent project is a standard Expo project, so you can download it and keep working on it elsewhere. Expo asked users to export their projects before July 31. If you had linked a GitHub repository, you can pull the code from there instead. The post doesn’t say what happens to project data after July 31.

Expo’s suggested way forward

Expo’s post lays out these steps:

  1. Open the project in Expo Agent and click Download, or pull it from the linked GitHub repository.
  2. In the project folder, run bun install or npm install.
  3. Open the project in your editor and keep building with Claude Code or Codex.
  4. Add the Expo MCP server and Expo’s open-source skills, so your agent has the same Expo context.
  5. Build, preview and submit through Expo’s services as before. Expo says these don’t change.

Expo also points to a beginner tutorial on building an app with AI, from prompt to running app, and to its Discord for help moving a project.

Who is affected

Only people in the Expo Agent closed beta. Expo’s build, preview and submit services carry on, and the rest of Expo’s changelog since then shows continued releases, including SDK 58 on October 15, 2026. The post doesn’t mention billing or refunds.

What it means if you’re choosing a tool

Expo no longer offers its own hosted, prompt-to-app builder. Its route for AI-assisted Expo apps is now a general coding agent, such as Claude Code or Codex, connected to Expo through its MCP server and skills, with Expo’s own services for builds and store submission.

What to do

If you still have an Expo Agent project that you didn’t download or link to GitHub, contact Expo through its Discord, the help channel its post names, to ask whether the project can still be recovered.
