WP Engine, the managed WordPress host, announced on June 3, 2026 that it has added bot management to Global Edge Security (GES), its security and performance service powered by Cloudflare. The release says the features were “available today”. GES already included a managed web application firewall, DDoS protection, image optimization and a global CDN.

What changed

The release names three new controls:

  • Customizable access rules: decide how automated traffic is handled by bot category or by region, for example allowing some crawlers and blocking others.
  • Instant lockdown: switch on “Under Attack” mode with one click during an attack, without waiting for support.
  • Edge-side optimization: caching and automatic optimizations at the edge to cut load on the server.

WP Engine says rules can go live the same day, and one toggle applies a block across the whole site.

Why WP Engine says it’s needed

The release says 76% of website traffic is unverified and that WP Engine mitigated more than 75 billion bot requests on its platform last year. AI agents, crawlers and other automated systems make it harder to spot threats, manage performance and control resource costs, the release says, and one-size-fits-all bot blocking can’t keep up with threats that change daily.

What it costs

Neither the press release nor the GES product page states a price or says which plans include GES. The GES page points to WP Engine’s plans page for pricing. Ask WP Engine for a quote if bot control is the reason you’re looking.

Who it’s for

WP Engine names digital agencies and online stores. Agencies can offer bot management to clients, and stores can limit harmful bot activity without blocking shoppers.

What to do

If AI crawlers are eating your bandwidth or slowing your site, compare this with the bot controls your current host or CDN already offers. If you are on WP Engine, check whether GES is part of your plan before buying it separately.
