Synthesia’s free Basic plan gives you 10 minutes of avatar video a month with a watermark. Starter costs $19 a month, or $14 a month billed yearly ($168), and Pro costs $89 a month, or $59 a month billed yearly ($708), as of November 2026. Once you count the 10 free minutes every plan includes, a finished minute of avatar video works out to between about $0.62 (Starter, yearly) and $1.39 (the larger Pro tiers, monthly).
We haven’t used Synthesia ourselves. The prices come from the site’s own data for Synthesia (checked November 2, 2026), and they match Synthesia’s pricing page as we read it on November 3, 2026. The credit rules come from that page and from Synthesia’s help center, read the same day. The per-minute figures are our own arithmetic from those numbers, not figures Synthesia publishes. Synthesia shows local currency in some countries; these are its US-dollar prices.

The pricing page frames the yearly discount as “3 months free” on Starter and “4 months free” on Pro. In dollars:
- Starter: 12 × $19 = $228 a year on monthly billing, against $168 billed yearly. You save $60, about 26%.
- Pro: 12 × $89 = $1,068 a year on monthly billing, against $708 billed yearly. You save $360, about 34%.
The first-month offers on monthly billing lower the first year a little: $9 + 11 × $19 = $218 for Starter, and $49 + 11 × $89 = $1,028 for Pro. Both are still more than the yearly price.
Synthesia’s billing policy says it doesn’t offer general, student, non-profit or education discounts.
Larger Pro tiers
Pro is sold at five credit levels. Synthesia’s help center calls the larger ones Pro 2×, 4×, 6× and 8×. The pricing page lists these prices:
| Pro level | Credits | Monthly billing | Yearly billing | Yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | 6,000 a month | $89 | $59 a month | $708 |
| Pro 2× | 12,000 a month | $176 ($95 first month) | $117 a month | $1,404 |
| Pro 4× | 24,000 a month | $347 ($179 first month) | $230 a month | $2,760 |
| Pro 6× | 36,000 a month | $514 ($259 first month) | $341 a month | $4,092 |
| Pro 8× | 48,000 a month | $676 ($329 first month) | $448 a month | $5,376 |
Source: Synthesia pricing page, November 3, 2026. The yearly totals are 12 × the monthly price shown for yearly billing. The 500 included credits and the 10 free minutes come on top of each level.
The larger levels carry only small volume discounts: the pricing page shows 1.25%, 2.5%, 3.75% and 5% off. Pro 2× costs about twice as much as Pro for twice the credits.
What does Synthesia’s free plan include?
Basic costs nothing and, per Synthesia’s help center, every self-serve plan, Basic included, gets each month:
- 10 minutes of video, which you can spend on video creation or dubbing
- 3 survey responses
- 500 credits
- plus a one-time 60 minutes of Interactive Avatar at signup
The limits that matter on Basic, from the pricing page: 9 stock avatars, one editor, and a Synthesia watermark on every video. Downloads and logo removal are listed as Starter features, so a Basic video is for testing, not publishing under your own brand. Basic is offered only on monthly billing, and the free minutes reset each month.
So, is Synthesia free? For trying the editor and a few short tests, yes. For any video you want to download and use without a watermark, the cheapest option is Starter at $14 a month billed yearly.
How do Synthesia credits work?
Since October 1, 2026, Synthesia counts almost all usage in credits. Its help center article on the change says the Creator plan was renamed Pro at the same price, the larger Pro levels were added, and every plan got the same monthly free allowance. Credits already in an account stayed there.
Synthesia says credits are used only when something is generated, never while you edit or preview. The prices per feature, from the pricing page FAQ and the help center:
| What you generate | Credits |
|---|---|
| Avatar video | About 100 per finished minute, more if the avatar is on screen the whole time |
| Dubbing with lip-sync | 80 per minute |
| Dubbing without lip-sync | 40 per minute |
| Video through the API | 160 per minute |
| Bulk personalization | 180 per minute |
| Survey response | 350 each, after the 3 included a month |
| Interactive Avatar | 10 per minute (avatar only), 20 per minute (with the full widget) |
| Personal avatar from Avatar Builder | 14 |
| AI images | 3 (FLUX.2) or 20 (Nanobanana 2, GPT Image 2) |
| Generated video clips (b-roll) | Varies by model, shown before you generate; Veo 3.1 Fast 115-140, Veo 3.1 230-460 |
| Motion graphics | Free |

Five rules decide how far the credits go:
- The free minutes go first. The help center says the 10 included minutes and 3 survey responses are used before credits.
- Credits don’t roll over. Monthly allowances reset each billing period. On yearly plans, the year’s credits are available up front: the help center gives 21,000 a year for Starter and 78,000 for Pro, which is the plan’s credits plus 500 included credits for each of 12 months.
- Edits are charged only for new footage. Synthesia’s help center says removing or reordering script words, changing punctuation, changing an avatar’s look or framing, pronunciation and voice tone add no credits. Adding words, adding or replacing an avatar, or changing the voice’s language or accent is charged for the length of the change.
- When credits run out, generation stops. The pricing page FAQ says video creation and survey collection pause until the plan renews, unless you buy extra credits or upgrade.
- Upgrading resets the balance. The help center says unused credits from the old plan don’t carry over; you get the new plan’s full allocation, and the upgrade is charged pro rata for the rest of the period.
Synthesia sells extra credits from the Billing page and offers automated top-ups when the balance runs low. The pricing page FAQ says credits bought separately are valid for 12 months. None of the pages we read give the price of extra credits, so we can’t say what a top-up minute costs.
What does a minute of Synthesia video really cost?
The pricing page’s minute estimates divide each plan’s credits by 100. Adding the 10 free minutes a month gives the total video a plan can make, and dividing the price by that gives a cost per minute. These figures assume the 100-credits-a-minute average; videos with the avatar on screen throughout use more.
| Plan and billing | Price | Video minutes (plan + free) | Cost per minute | Cost per 100 credits, plan credits only |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter, monthly | $19 a month | 12.5 + 10 = 22.5 a month | $0.84 | $1.52 |
| Starter, yearly | $168 a year | 150 + 120 = 270 a year | $0.62 | $1.12 |
| Pro, monthly | $89 a month | 60 + 10 = 70 a month | $1.27 | $1.48 |
| Pro, yearly | $708 a year | 720 + 120 = 840 a year | $0.84 | $0.98 |
| Pro 2×, monthly | $176 a month | 120 + 10 = 130 a month | $1.35 | $1.47 |
| Pro 2×, yearly | $1,404 a year | 1,440 + 120 = 1,560 a year | $0.90 | $0.98 |
| Pro 4×, monthly | $347 a month | 240 + 10 = 250 a month | $1.39 | $1.45 |
| Pro 4×, yearly | $2,760 a year | 2,880 + 120 = 3,000 a year | $0.92 | $0.96 |
| Pro 8×, monthly | $676 a month | 480 + 10 = 490 a month | $1.38 | $1.41 |
| Pro 8×, yearly | $5,376 a year | 5,760 + 120 = 5,880 a year | $0.91 | $0.93 |
Three things stand out:
- Yearly billing is the biggest lever. On every level, yearly billing cuts the cost of a minute by about a third.
- Starter has the cheapest minutes, because the 10 free minutes are a large share of its total. You pay for Pro to get personal avatars, more stock avatars and more guests, not for cheaper minutes.
- Bigger Pro levels don’t make minutes much cheaper. On yearly billing, a Pro 8× minute costs about $0.91 against $0.84 on base Pro, because the free 10 minutes matter less as the plan grows and the volume discount tops out at 5%.
Dubbing goes further per credit. At 40 credits a minute without lip-sync, Pro’s 6,000 monthly credits cover 150 minutes of dubbing; with lip-sync, at 80 credits, 75 minutes. The pricing page’s own estimates (about 78 dubbing minutes a month on Pro) assume lip-sync.
Worked examples: which plan fits your volume?
A small business making four 5-minute training videos a month. That’s 4 × 5 = 20 minutes. The first 10 are free; the other 10 need about 10 × 100 = 1,000 credits. Starter’s 1,250 credits a month cover it. Cost: $19 a month, or $168 a year on yearly billing, which also covers the year’s 240 minutes (270 available).
A team publishing about an hour of video a month. 60 minutes − 10 free = 50 minutes × 100 = 5,000 credits. Starter is too small; Pro’s 6,000 credits fit with room for edits. Cost: $708 a year billed yearly, or $1,068 a year on monthly billing ($1,028 in the first year with the $49 first month).
Translating one 10-minute video into five languages. That’s 5 × 10 = 50 minutes of dubbing. The 10 free minutes can go to dubbing, which leaves 40 minutes.
- With lip-sync: 40 × 80 = 3,200 credits.
- Without lip-sync: 40 × 40 = 1,600 credits.
Both are more than Starter’s 1,250 monthly credits, so a one-off project like this needs Pro for at least a month ($89, or $49 if it’s your first month) or a credit top-up at a price Synthesia doesn’t publish. On Starter’s yearly plan, the 21,000 credits for the year are available up front, so the same project fits, but it uses about 15% of the year’s credits.
A training department making 150 minutes a month. 150 − 10 free = 140 minutes × 100 = 14,000 credits a month. Pro 2× (12,000) falls short; Pro 4× (24,000) covers it with room to spare. Cost: $2,760 a year billed yearly, or 12 × $347 = $4,164 on monthly billing. At this volume, Synthesia’s Enterprise plan with “unlimited video minutes” is worth a sales call, but Synthesia doesn’t publish its price.
Synthesia vs HeyGen: which costs less?

| Entry plan, monthly billing | $19 a month | $29 a month |
| Next plan, yearly billing | Pro $59 a month ($708 a year) | Pro $41 a month ($488 a year) |
| Next plan, monthly billing | $89 a month | $49 a month |

Synthesia is cheaper at the entry level. HeyGen’s Pro plan costs less than Synthesia’s Pro on both billing terms. But only Synthesia says how many minutes its credits make, so a true per-minute comparison isn’t possible from the vendors’ pages. What to watch for before you pay
- No refunds. Synthesia’s billing policy says purchases are “non-cancelable and, except where the Contract expressly states otherwise, non-refundable.” Forgetting to cancel doesn’t qualify for a refund, even if you didn’t use the plan.
- Automatic renewal, and a reminder isn’t guaranteed. Paid plans renew at the same per-unit price. The billing policy says a reminder email “isn’t guaranteed for every plan,” so note your renewal date.
- You lose your videos when you leave. After cancelling, you keep access until the end of the billing period; after that, Synthesia’s help center says you lose access to Synthesia and all videos in your account. Export what you want to keep first.
- Unused credits vanish. Monthly credits reset every period, and an upgrade resets the balance to the new plan’s allocation.
- Downgrades wait. Upgrades take effect immediately; downgrades start at the next billing period.
- API and bulk videos cost more. API video uses 160 credits a minute and bulk personalization 180, against about 100 in the editor. Synthesia’s help center warns that heavy API or bulk users may find their credits go less far.
- Lip-sync doubles dubbing cost. 80 credits a minute against 40.
- Studio avatars are a separate purchase. The pricing page lists a Studio Express-1 avatar as an add-on at $1,000 a year, for annual plans only. The billing policy says Studio Avatars can’t be refunded once produced.
- One editor on self-serve plans. Starter and Pro each have one editor; the extra people are guests. Shared workspaces, SSO and SCORM export are Enterprise features.
Which Synthesia plan should you choose?
- You want to test avatar video: Basic. Ten minutes a month is enough to try avatars, voices and the editor. Expect a watermark.
- You make up to about 20 minutes a month: Starter, billed yearly at $168. It has the lowest cost per minute of any plan (about $0.62), as long as you’re sure you’ll use it for a year.
- You need your own avatar or more guests: Pro, billed yearly at $708. It adds five personal avatars, 180+ stock avatars and five guests, and about 70 minutes a month in total.
- You need a few minutes beyond Starter for one project: one month of Pro on monthly billing can cost less than a year of a bigger plan. Cancel before the renewal date.
- You make several hours a month or need SSO and shared workspaces: compare a large Pro level with an Enterprise quote.
- Your videos are mostly dubbing: count 40 or 80 credits a minute, not 100, and check whether you need lip-sync.
