Gemini API now logs requests by default in new paid projects
From October 26, 2026, new paid-tier Gemini API projects store Generate Content requests by default for up to 55 days. Older projects keep their setting; store=false opts out.

Google changed a privacy default in the Gemini API on October 26, 2026. Paid-tier projects created
on or after that date now store Generate Content API requests by default (store=true), so the
full prompt and response are kept as logs in Google AI Studio. Logs are kept for up to 55 days by
default. Projects created before October 26 keep their current setting.
What changed
The change covers the generateContent, streamGenerateContent and batchGenerateContent
endpoints. Google says it brings them in line with the newer Interactions API, which already
stored requests by default to keep conversation state on the server. In projects created before
October 26, Generate Content calls are still stored only if logging is turned on in AI Studio.
According to Google’s logs documentation, stored logs let you inspect “the full prompt and response from Gemini,” along with context from earlier turns. Logs expire and are marked for deletion after the retention window. You can shorten it to 7, 14 or 28 days per project. Logs you save into a dataset do not expire. Logging is only available on the paid tier, and some inputs are not logged, including Imagen and Veo, embedding models, and requests with videos, GIFs or PDFs.
Is the data used for training?
Google’s data logging page says prompts and responses in logs “are not used for product improvement or development” by default, and that logs are private to your Google Cloud project. That changes only if you choose to share a dataset with Google. Shared datasets are used as demonstration data, and human reviewers may read them after they are disconnected from your account, API key and project. Google advises against putting personal, sensitive or confidential information in shared datasets.
The docs do not mention any charge for log storage.
What to do
If you create new Gemini projects and don’t want prompts kept by Google:
- Set
store=falseon each request. Google says the request-level setting overrides the project setting. - Or turn off Generate Content API logging in the Settings panel of the Logs and Datasets dashboard in AI Studio.
- If you keep logging on, pick the shortest retention window that works for you.
Teams with data-handling rules should check every project created since October 26. To compare Gemini’s prices with other model APIs, see our AI model price comparison.
