Apple opens iPhone Duo app submissions ahead of its October 23 launch

Apple says iPhone Duo goes on sale October 23, 2026. Developers should recompile with Xcode 27.1, and from April 2027 every app submission must include iPhone Duo screenshots.

Apple opened App Store submissions for apps optimized for iPhone Duo on October 5, 2026, and said the device will be available to customers from October 23, 2026. Apple first told developers to get ready for it on September 9. Its developer posts don’t describe the hardware in their text; the image on the September 9 post shows an iPhone partially folded, with the Home Screen and widgets across both displays.

What developers need to do

Recompile with Xcode 27.1. Apple says this version adds development support for iPhone Duo. Device Hub in Xcode can show how your app behaves on iPhone Duo across all poses and orientations.
Update your store assets. New screenshot and app preview specifications cover iPhone Duo, and a preview tool in App Store Connect shows how your product page will look on it.
Submit. Optimized apps can be submitted now. If you upload iPhone Duo screenshots, your product page shows a badge saying the app is optimized for iPhone Duo.

The April 2027 deadline

Apple says that starting in April 2027, any app or game submitted will need to include screenshots for iPhone Duo. That lands in the same month as Apple’s requirement to build iOS and iPadOS apps with the iOS 27 SDK or later.

Help from Apple

Apple’s iPhone Duo developer page lists design guidance (“Designing for iPhone Duo”), documentation on preparing apps, a readiness checklist, videos on adaptive layouts, and Group Labs and workshops. Its focus is on apps that resize and adjust their layouts dynamically, and on multiple displays and scenes.

Cross-platform tools

Expo’s SDK 58, released October 15, 2026, adds iPhone Duo support for React Native apps, including a new expo-hinge package. Expo says apps built with the iOS 27 SDK get resizable iPhone support automatically.

What to do

Rebuild your app with Xcode 27.1 and check it in Device Hub in every pose before October 23. Add iPhone Duo screenshots with your next update rather than waiting for April 2027, and if a builder makes your iOS build, ask when it will use Xcode 27.1.
