Akamai drops the monthly price cap for G8, GPU and extra IPv4 on Linode

From July 1, 2026, Akamai bills G8 Dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes and additional IPv4 addresses for every hour used, with no monthly cap. Other compute keeps the cap.

Akamai drops the monthly price cap for G8, GPU and extra IPv4 on Linode. Effective: Jul 1, 2026, Applies to: G8, GPU, extra IPv4, Monthly cap: Removed, Other compute: Unchanged.

Akamai changed how it bills three Linode services on July 1, 2026. G8 Dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes and additional IPv4 addresses are now billed for the actual hours used each month, with no monthly price cap. The first invoice issued after July 1 reflects the change. All other Akamai cloud compute keeps both an hourly and a monthly price.

How the old model worked

Akamai’s billing docs describe a hybrid model. Services run up hourly charges, rounded up to the nearest hour, but most paid services also have a monthly rate that acts as a cap: you are never billed more than that rate for the month, apart from network transfer overages.

For G8 Dedicated, GPU and extra IPv4, that cap is gone. Each hour is billed at the hourly rate, however many hours the month has.

What it means for your bill

The billing docs use a 30-day month of 720 hours in their example. A service that runs all month will now be billed for more hours in a 31-day month, and the docs note that daylight saving time adds or removes an hour: 721 hours in November and 743 in March. With the cap gone, those extra hours show up on the invoice for these three services.

Neither the changelog nor the billing docs give the hourly rates. Akamai points to its pricing page for current prices.

Who is affected

  • Anyone running G8 Dedicated Linodes.
  • Anyone running GPU Linodes. The same changelog also raises rates for one GPU instance type in its European data centers, Singapore and Jakarta.
  • Anyone paying for additional IPv4 addresses.

The changelog says all other compute services are unaffected and keep both hourly and monthly pricing.

What to do

Check your July and later invoices for G8, GPU and IPv4 line items, and compare them with the monthly figure you budgeted. If you hold additional IPv4 addresses you no longer use, releasing them stops their hourly charge.
